Tim Thomas with an average play!

May 24, 10:32 AM

Tim Thomas, outstanding skill in the net during game five of the Eastern Conference Finals.

Just know this this about Tim Thomas — Tim Thomas does not do push ups when he exercises. When Tim Thomas exercises, he pushes the earth down!

(Give the image [it’s an animated gif] a few moments to load, then it will run a little smoother)

BRRRR!!

Feb 1, 06:17 AM

Dress warm people! Actual temp right now (just before sun up on 1 Feb), 19 BELOW ZERO. There is also a 20 MPH wind blowing and the chart says that equals 45 below! I don’t know if you are aware of it, but a few years ago (I think, about 10 or 15), the wind chill charts were re-vamped. If this were 1995, it would probably be closer to 60 below zero. The predicted high for today is 5 below zero. It was close to 50 last weekend – where did those temps go?

Turn up the heat, put on a sweater, bring me some whisky!

NetFlix Streaming Does Not Cut It!!

Jan 26, 08:43 PM

I was a NetFlix customer a few years ago, back when they had a different streaming plan. It did not provide enough hours for me to watch anything, so I put the account on hold. A few weeks ago, my DVD player bit the dust, so I went all out and bought a Blu-Ray player. I got the Sony BDP-570 and it has all kinds of streaming services built into it. Most of the services are high def. Hulu+ has been great!!! But this little rant is not about Hulu, so I’ll just not mention them anymore, other than to say they are fantastic….

NetFlix, at first, seemed pretty cool. Loaded up our queue with some movies and watched away…. the first week or 10 days we had the Sony. Lately, while trying to watch “Teas of the Sun”, our experience has been terrible. Last Saturday was the first attempt at watching this title and we gave up after the first 20 minutes of the movie. In that 20 minute time frame, we probably experienced at least 5 buffering episodes, probably 10!

Tonight, we are about 75 minutes into the movie, in movie time. In actual time, we are now up to a good 150 minutes. At times, the movie has buffered every two or three minutes. At best, we managed to get about 15 minutes of viewing time before the stream buffered again.

Calling support was useless. The rep insisted that everything under the sun was at fault, as long as it did not include anything related to NetFlix. The rep was doing his best to absolve NetFlix from any responsibility. Right now, I am on a free trial of NetFlix. I am pretty sure that I will not become a paying customer again. They got about two weeks to astound the hell out of me to make up for the crappy experience I had with “Tears of the Sun”.

And…. I did not even mention the lack of a decent selection of movies as a streaming customer.

Nor did I mention the one little glitch I had with Hulu – on Saturday, I got all settled in to watch some “No Ordinary Family” on Hulu and I got an error message about the service being unavailable. Being a new customer, I did not know what this meant or if it was common. I e-mailed tech support (something NetFlix could really take a hint with), and before I sent the e-mail, the service was up and running again. It may have been down for a while, but I only noted the problem for less than a minute. Before my show started however, I had already received a reply from Hulu’s tech support – they credited my account with a weeks free service because of the inconvenience I had.

Sure, Hulu is mainly TV and NetFlix is mainly movies, but I know who I’ll give my money and loyalty to….

WOW!! Check Out The Web Cam Now

Jan 21, 05:01 PM

Got a new lens for the web cam. It’s just a cheapy from eBay and I’m sure the actual lens material is plastic. But, Holy Cow!! It is so much clearer than before and it has the entire front yard and a few of the neighbors houses in the view. It will be a great weather cam as well a “what’s Les up to now” cam.

Check it out for a 320 by 240 view or Check it out for a 640 by 480 view

Remember the user name and password if prompted is “user” and “pass”.

Have Fun!!

oops! Kind of messed up a few things.

Dec 27, 07:47 AM

My website is configured a certain way that does not quite conform to the manner prescribed by Textpattern, but it works.

Last night, I was reading up on moving everything so that my website will conform to the exact standard prescribed by Textpattern – basically, have everything in the root of the directory versus the way I do it, which is everything in a sub-directory (originally, my website was designed in a different manner and what you see now for my website was really a sub-directory).

Well, things did not go so well and for a brief period last night, I was sweating some bullets at a good rate. I completely hosed everything. I do not know why, I think I may have overwritten some configuration files accidently, thus preventing the site from displaying properly.

Luckily, I had (almost) a good backup. Almost, as in, it was a few weeks old. About the only thing I did not have in backup was some picture files. Therefore, you will see a few blank spots on some articles. Not to worry, you won’t be missing much by not having the photo.

I’ll try to be more careful.

My Latest Read

Dec 15, 02:13 PM

I have recently decided to redesign my web page. I have always had what I called a “blog” section and I was (and still am) using Textpattern to do it all. Prior to the beginning of this month (Dec ’10), I never really used the “blog” feature of my web site.

Then I got to looking at what Textpattern is, what it can do, and how it can do it. Boy, have I opened up a can of worms for myself (I say that and mean, I have some learning to do — CMS, CSS, XHTML, XML, oh my!).

Textpattern Solution Without the book “Textpattern Solutions” by Potts, Sable, and Smith (with Fredborg and Lindley), I would have never been able to get started, let alone, keep going. The text takes you through every step of the process, all the way from downloading the needed software, setting up the programs and permissions, thru explaining each and every bit of the interface, right up to some advanced features.

I bought my copy from Amazon, I’m sure it is available at many other locations.

New Web Server

Dec 11, 07:21 PM

I finally realized it. Even though I’ve known it was coming ever since I got the Nikon D90 (lots of pictures getting saved to the server) and the size of the hard drives was getting smaller and smaller….

I'm giving her all she's got Captain!!I put all the RAM I could in the 8 year old Dell Dimension, just like Scotty used to tell Captain Kirk all the time — “I’m giving her all she’s got Captain, she can’t take no more!” Even with all I could put in the ol’ girl, she could only take 2 GB of RAM. Enough to keep her going, but far from what she needed.

As far as hard drive space, well, every USB port and every IDE channel was taken up. No room left at all to do anything, space-wise. There were symlinks upon symlinks keeping the file system all in one piece.

Ever since I really discovered Ubuntu a few months ago, I’ve been mulling this change over in my mind. Ubuntu has got it’s act together and I think this new machine will do just fine for me. 8 GB or RAM and a dual core processor, so the new machine is running the 64 bit version of the latest release 10.10. I initially wanted to go with the Server version of 10.10, but it was a real pain in the ass – I ended up loading the desktop version and I stripped a few things out of it. I’ll strip some more as the days go by.

Most of the links on this site are up and running again, but there is still some work to be done.
